Guest Speaker

As women of color, she never gave up to pursue her dream and achieve her goal. Becoming the first female to be awarded a full basketball scholarship to Monmouth College, she received her BS in Computer Science. "Never settle while you have freedom," she always keeps moving from one place to another location to discover the world. During the downside of her life, she chose to believe in herself and have the courage to move on (with her pets). As one of the young Microsoft millionaires at 39, Dziko contributed over $150,000 to establish TAF. Inevitably, she is an incredible woman.

Trish Millines-Dziko

Founder and Executive Director of Technology Access Foundation (TAF)

In my opinion, she is a charming lady who always likes to share her unique perspective towards the topic of cyber security. She also encourages us to consider a career in Cyber Security as there will be 1.5 Million open positions by 2020 expectedly. She shared about her life journey and taught us some favorable attitudes that we should learn from, such as effective communicator, observant, and ability to clearly articulate complex concepts, to be successful in the cyber security field.

Her research is grounded in anti-oppressive education, postcolonial and feminist theory, with a focus on girls and women of color using and creating digital media. During the research panel, she shared her passion in learning and how her determination in English literature leads to her success today. She also encourage us to keep fighting the mainstream and surround us with supporting community to stay focus in achieving our goals.

Assistant Professor in the area of Digital Youth at the University of Washington Information School

Dr. Negin Dahya

Her research is focusing on literacy engagement and outreach program such as "Read-a-Rama" camp. As women of color, she never abandons her interest towards children literature in spite of the adversity she faced for the publication about multicultural children literature. She encourage us to study abroad as that period was the turning point in her life and how she fell in love with English literature.

Dr. Michelle Martin

Beverly Cleary Professor for Children and Youth Services

She is a self-motivated woman who sees being a woman in the male-dominated workplace as an advantage and strength. She encourage us to keep proving ourselves that "Woman is strong!" in every field we participate in future. She also shares her story, which "it's complicated," about her conversation with two elder men who underestimates the political knowledge of a woman based on their perception.  She urges us to stand up and say something for being a woman (respond to correspond), at the same time, do not have to burn the relationship. Besides, during the session, she teaches us about the basic component of dveloping a professional LinkedIn account.

In overall, Dr. Negin Dahya & Dr. Michelle Martin taught us a life lesson: what we are learning right now in university might not be using in the workplace after we graduate". SO we have to appreciate this opportunity to get involved and engage with what we like to learn now. What most people don't realize the school is a way of preparing for work life in various degrees, primarily knowledge. However, it is also a place that individuals with the same interests and values can come together and connect wich is similar to the real world.
